As we turn our heads to look at artists regionally and internationally from a Middle Eastern viewpoint, our special section Mapping Cultures explores a travelling show from Jeddah to Abu Dhabi at Warehouse421, Gil Heitor Cortesão at Carbon 12, a documentation of urban fragments by Nazgol Ansarinia at Green Art Gallery, Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti at NYUAD and Katya Traboulsi’s show of Beirut bombshells. We also take a look at regional politics at the first Lahore Biennial, at Art Basel Hong Kong and at the Armory Show. Also in New York, we speak to street artist JR about his practice. Back home, Canvas researches the extensive reach of modernism in Arab cities including Sam Bardouil and Till Fellrath’s exhibition at Art Dubai, Saddakhaneh works at Meem gallery, Paul Guiragossian’s retrospective and Karim Sultan and Mandy Merzaban at Barjeel Art Foundation. Last but not least, we look at Reza Derakshani’s work at Sophia Contemporary Gallery as well as UAE artists at the Ishara group show and the in5 x Art Dubai residency with artist Onishi Yasuaki.
