This year’s Venice Biennale has a clear focus on the global movement of people, and rightly so. Displacement, dispossession and alienation are all around us, which is why we chose Beyond Borders as our theme for this issue. As before, we survey the Middle East in Venice and share our selection of the best international pavilions. We also review the main show, off-grid shows and discover rising stars. Outside of Italy, we explore the power and purpose of the Jean-Paul Najar Foundation, review sound-based works at the Sharjah Biennial and Jenny Holzer’s latest solo show in Zurich. In Best of Basel we offer a rundown of the best and worst at the fair this year and we also take a look at the continuously expanding fair Design Miami.
