Issue 92

March - April 2020

Little did we know in the beginning of 2020 that the pandemic Covid-19 would have paralysed the world. Our current issue looks at what the limitations and possibilities of art practice are in these tumultous times. We reflect on the artistic expressions springing out of the streets of Beirut, Chile and Hong Kong in the face of crumbling political structures, environmental crises and anxieties over technology and the future. We look at art as a tool to confer a legacy. From the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, which dealt with the rights of future generations, to Desert X in Al Ula with its exhibit of monumental works in a majestic site of ancient civilisations; from Jeddah’s 7th edition of 21,39 which had young artists sound the environmental alarm to the Lahore Biennale featured on our cover which explores the crimes that are committed against landscape and our place in the universe. It is time for us to look around as witnesses, artists, critics and publishers and see what kind of future we can carve out for ourselves and for the planet.
