Issue 13-3

In this issue, we focus on the position of women in art, prompted in part by Jeff Koons’s groundbreaking collaboration with Louis Vuitton which, among other masterpieces, features that iconic muse Mona Lisa. Intrigued by the female dimension in artistic creation, we (somewhat playfully) posed the question, ‘Is Art a Woman?’. A raft of recent appointments has seen women assume top managerial positions across the global art world and we interview some of these female movers and shakers of our time. We also take an inside look at the women in the Elgiz Museum collection, at new forms of feminist art developing in the Middle East and offer a timeline on the most important dates in feminist art history. In addition, we take a closer look at performance art and corporeal art and profile artist Tala Maddani. We visit documenta (14) in Athens and explore the second edition of Bahrain’s young art fair.
